Why you are nervous in front of a crowd, but not one-on-one.
Dec 06, 2024This took me years to figure out, but let me solve it for you in less than a minute.
If you’ve ever said, “I’m fine one-on-one, but as soon as there are 2-3 people I get nervous.”
The problem is your thoughts.
You have certain rules for yourself when you speak in front of one person.
You have a different set of rules for yourself when you speak in front of a crowd.
This second set of rules is interfering with your ability.
An example is, “It is ok to make a mistake one on one, but if I make a mistake during a presentation my colleagues will judge me.”
To overcome your nerves, you need to investigate your thoughts and figure out what these rules are.
Then change them to ones that support you.
Going back to our example, you could have the same permission for yourself about mistakes in both scenarios.
“It’s pretty normal to make a mistake while public speaking. It’s not a reflection of my character. I know my value as an employee.”
Finding and switching out these thoughts is a process.
It will take a lot longer than a minute - sorry!*
I promise it is absolutely worth the effort.
I've always said that if you can do it one-on-one, you can do it in front of a crowd.
This is how.
P.s. This is also why you are fine speaking until someone with higher status walks in! Same problem - you have different rules.
